Virtual pharmacy clean room

15 04 2009

It’s great ! It’s virtual reality for pharmacy students.
Not virtual world in this case. But I hope to see something like that soon in Second Life : a virtual clean room to practice preparations like chemotherapies.

The article : http://www.lafayette-online.com/purdue-news/2009/04/virtual-clean-room-pharmacist-training/

Extract :

The simulator runs in a multiwall immersive environment at the Envision Center and will work on wall-sized panels and portable display systems, too. The equipment employs 3-D glasses and a wireless controller something like a Nintendo Wii’s to put users in the middle of the virtual world being projected and allow them to navigate and manipulate it. Head-tracking capability adjusts the view as a user looks around, or “walks” through, the environment, which is detailed down to the labels on the medicine bottles. The software also has been modified to run on desktop and laptop computers.

The virtual clean room was created from hundreds of digital pictures taken at Clarian Health Partners and Wishard Health Services in Indianapolis, in facilities compliant with USP 797, the federal regulation governing pharmacy clean rooms. The computer-graphics technology students also captured ambient sound and included it in the simulator.

Flying through the virtual pharmacy clean room

A fly-through video created by students at Purdue Universitys Envision Center for Data Perceptualization offers an overall tour of the virtual pharmacy clean room.

Working in the virtual clean room

Steve Abel, assistant dean for clinical programs, School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences Purdue University, directs a student as she explores the virtual clean room and its features, including some things that shouldnt be there.

The Imperial College London Sim : his tower, his conference room, his sandbox and … his hospital

It’s this link for the visist : SLURL http://slurl.com/secondlife/Imperial%20College%20London/150/86/27

First of all, you have to register online :

Imperial College London

Imperial College London

Pr Martyn Partridge :http://www1.imperial.ac.uk/medicine/people/m.partridge

is always at his desk.

Imperial College London

You can search the right diagnosis on 5 different patients.

First wash your hands, ask patients basis information, perform a first diagnosis (differential diagnosis), and next …

Imperial College London

perform some tests, new investigations for a final diagnosis :

Imperial College London

The results of the investigations of each patient are in dedicated rooms. Here is the Laboratory.

It’s 5 clinical cases :

  1. Pneumonia
  2. Anticoagulant
  3. Asthma
  4. Pneumothorax
  5. Lung cancer

It’s summarize in the Patient Management Area with some slides about this clinical cases:

A very easy-to-use simulation : you are helped by a reminder (wear as a badge on you at the entry of this hospital) so you can know all the time at which steps you have taken a break.

Best healthcare places in Second Life

24 02 2009

Landmarks_001

Ready ! They are ready : 24 landmarks dedicated to healthcare (and some others to chemistry).

2 others on first floor are for SLoodle (for elearning) and ISI (for more web & SL ressources).

Click on it and each landmark provide the teleport landmark and some information about the place in a notecard.

They are all made in the JoKay Wollongong’s style :

Jokaydia.

Go to EAHP exhibition website and click on the ‘Teleport now’ button to visit the place.

To help people to visit, the 12 most important are in a free tour HUD.

Pharmatopia : an international collaboration for an immersive learning simulation for pharmacy and pharmaceutical studies

4 02 2009

First of all, the Pharmatopia project is an international collaboration :

  • Monash University – Australia, Malaysia, South Africa & Italy.
  • University of Queensland – Australia
  • UNC University of North Carolina – USA
  • Univeristy of Nottingham – UK
  • Keele university – UK

Pharmatopia want to be an Immersive Learning Simulation For Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Studies.

Pharmatopia_006

Pharmatopia is the name of the first sim builded of three :

  • Pharmatopia
  • Pharmatopia OS
  • Aesclepia

Map-Pharmatopia

Pharmatopia is actually a closed access island.
The access is only available to member institutions.

The public opening access to the island will come in the future, but
that probably won’t happen until around the middle of 2009.

Under request, you can have a student guest account, that has access to Pharmatopia, but only for 30 days. All the details for this guest access, here.

Pharmatopia is made by 3DI developers :

Something like the NESIM project (Nursing education simulation) for pharmacy students : an amazing simulation.
Exhibitions and meetings are easy in Second Life but simulation using HUD are a next and higher step !

Last but not least, a work in progress of UNC is rez on the sim : the hospital of Greensboro.

Few things about 3D healthcare

6 04 2008

No link with ‘2nd Life’, only some few cool things about 3D healthcare online.

  • Games for Health 4th Annual Conference

Gamesforhealth

This will be May 8-9, 2008 Baltimore MD.

A part will be of course about virtual worlds and health ….

Details of the core conference are at http://www.gamesforhealth.org

  • Sophia’s garden

Healing in Community™Online is a virtual world that combines the richness of real-life collaboration with online learning to help families of children with life-threatening and chronic conditions harness the power of community to address all of their needs.

A Flickr set, a Slideshare space, aaaand ….. an extension in a virtual world.

Is it There ? Need to investigate.

West Palomar Hospital : my visit

27 03 2008

I have read about this project that it is a waste of money and necessarily of time and energy. Well, we need to remember what Aimee Weber say about Second Life : “it’s a theme park”.

east view

Here the theme is a “healthcare hotel”. It’s like the Aloft hotel experience : a test and demonstration 3D space.

Map of the sim / the hospital

The sim and the building are designed. Of course, the car park is too small. They are always too small. But the map is studied. Looking at, it is obvious that it’s a copy of a (in construction) real building. I love the access for the heavy lorries to the logistic services and the pharmacy. Well done !

Scan in the ward

Scan at the bed in the patient room

The EMR on the wall

The Electronic Medical Record on the wall

Inside the hospital, the spaces to visit are limited to the hall, the patient room, and an examination room. That’s enough for the demonstration.

PalomarWest Hospital RFID Wrist Band

The Palomar West Hospital RFID Wrist Band

The visitor is guided during all his visit since the moment he wear the “Palomar West Hospital RFID Wrist Band” on his left forearm. All is designed for demonstration and live experience and it’s well done.

The first time  I’m gone there, at the opening, I met Knoh Oh and MB Chevalier. A great pleasure.

PalomarWest Hospital

Next times I come, it was always someone on the sim visiting. :-) What I call a success !
