Monolith – a protein rezzer

30 03 2009

This week-end, Monolith a new molecular rezzer has been presented at the 2009 Virtual World Best Practice in Education Conference.

It look like a well-known black box :

Monolith (5)

But it’s a rezzer working like show on this slide :

A great work of Erich Bremer (the same name inSL ! – http://www.ebremer.com), Associate Director, Medical Informatics @ School of Medicine, State University at Stony Brook.

But this tool use TOO MANY prims ! It will be better to use it on an opensim !

Best healthcare places in Second Life

24 02 2009

Landmarks_001

Ready ! They are ready : 24 landmarks dedicated to healthcare (and some others to chemistry).

2 others on first floor are for SLoodle (for elearning) and ISI (for more web & SL ressources).

Click on it and each landmark provide the teleport landmark and some information about the place in a notecard.

They are all made in the JoKay Wollongong’s style :

Jokaydia.

Go to EAHP exhibition website and click on the ‘Teleport now’ button to visit the place.

To help people to visit, the 12 most important are in a free tour HUD.

NMR spectroscopy game in Second Life

9 02 2009

NMR spectroscopy is a great method to identify organic molecules and so most of the therapeutic active compound. Very useful in pharmacy.

The NMR spectrum viewer is a SL spectral viewing tool working on Second Nature sims.

NMR game

1O months later, this viewer is combined with the Orac molecule rezzer, and ChemSpider Open Data spectra.

Now it’s a game with 5 rounds: the NMR game !

Goal : Five times to find the right molecule of 5 corresponding NMR spectrum displayed

The game is set up on the American Chemical Society sim.

I LOVE this game ! It work fine.

When SL and mirror worlds converge…

Abstract :
This paper describes technologies from Daden Limited for geographically mapping and accessing live news stories/feeds, as well as other real-time, real-world data feeds (e.g., Google Earth KML feeds and GeoRSS feeds) in the 3-D virtual world of Second Life, by plotting and updating the corresponding Earth location points on a globe or some other suitable form (in-world), and further linking those points to relevant information and resources. This approach enables users to visualise, interact with, and even walk or fly through, the plotted data in 3-D. Users can also do the reverse: put pins on a map in the virtual world, and then view the data points on the Web in Google Maps or Google Earth. The technologies presented thus serve as a bridge between mirror worlds like Google Earth and virtual worlds like Second Life. We explore the geo-data display potential of virtual worlds and their likely convergence with mirror worlds in the context of the future 3-D Internet or Metaverse, and reflect on the potential of such technologies and their future possibilities, e.g., their use to develop emergency/public health virtual situation rooms to effectively manage emergencies and disasters in real time. The paper also covers some of the issues associated with these technologies, namely user interface accessibility and individual privacy.

The importance of patents for scientists

5 11 2007

Tru Indigo (Sue Scott IRL) speak us about patents at the Second Nature Cafe. She is, a patent attorney working as a consultant to Abel & Imray in London. Before that, she acted as an advisor on patent matters to the UK government on a number of occasions, was Head of Patents at BTG and originally began life with a chemistry degree from Oxford.

Orac : the new Molecule Rezzer of Hiro Sheridan

21 10 2007

A Second Life molecule rezzer , named Orac,

Orac

that accepts InChI, InChIKey, and SMILES input, queries 3 different web services, and rezzes the 3D minimized molecule.

Video shot on Second Nature Island.

Many thanks to Rajarshi, the folks at chemspider.com, Jean-Claude Bradley (Horace Moody in SL), and Eloise for advising me on how to get the most out of llhttprequest.

Read about it here, and another project (3D periodic table) here.
