My name is Jena Ball (aka Jenaia Morane) and I am a writer, editor, and educator with an avid interest in how virtual reality is shaping how we see and interact with one another. I am also the founder of The Nature of Writing (www.thenatureofwriting) – a firm specializing in helping companies get the word out about their products and services. My most recent projects include: creating customized writing courses for underachieving teens in Colorado, overseeing the build of the new HIV/AIDS sim in Second Life, and blogging about the ongoing adventures of my intrepid little avatar in Days of Our Second Lives (www.daysofoursecondlives.com).
On December 1, 2008 Second Life will participate in World AIDS Day by opening a new sim devoted entirely to HIV/AIDSoutreach and support. The name of the new sim is Karuṇā, which comes from an early Indo-Aryan language of India. Karuṇā embodies the desire to remove harm and suffering, and is paired with mettā, the desire to bring about the well-being and happiness of others.
Karuna is being funded by a generous grant from the National Library of Medicine.
In addition to providing infomation resources, support, and networking opportunities, Karuna will be built around a Garden of Experience, where the experiences of those dealing with HIV/AIDS will be shared in a variety of formats including poetry, photos, music, and video.
For more information about this project, see http://www.karunasl.info.
Can You Help Us Get the Word Out About World AIDS Day and Karuṇā ?
We need help both inworld and in RL getting the word out about Karuṇā and the events of World AIDS Day. If you can spread the word, please contact me at email@example.com or inworld by IMing Jenaia Morane. We have World AIDS Day posters with fantastic free gifts, donation boxes to be handed out, and a schedule of great events on the day itself. Many RL musicians are also donating their time to help us get the word out and celebreate Karuṇā’s grand opening.
In particular, we are eager to receive stories and photos for display on Karuṇā, so if you know of anyone who has a good HIV/AIDS related story to share (poems, narratives, photos, videos, music) please let us know.
